Life Insight From Experience

The L.I.F.E. Diversion Program is a youth intervention experience designed to help young people understand the real-world consequences of poor decision-making and encourage positive life choices. The program provides structured exposure to the criminal justice system combined with guided discussion and reflection to support long-term behavioral change.

This diversion model focuses on education, accountability, and perspective rather than punishment, helping participants make informed decisions that can positively impact their future.

What Participants Experience

Participants take part in a guided visit to Richard J. Donovan State Prison, where they hear directly from incarcerated individuals about their personal experiences, life choices, and the realities of incarceration.

The program includes facilitated conversations that focus on accountability, cause and effect, goal setting, and understanding how everyday decisions can shape long-term outcomes. The experience is designed to be impactful, educational, and age-appropriate.

The L.I.F.E. Diversion Program aims to reduce repeat offenses and risky behavior by giving youth firsthand insight into the long-term effects of criminal actions. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their choices, recognize turning points, and develop healthier paths forward.

Youth diversion programs are widely recognized as effective tools for early intervention, helping participants avoid deeper involvement in the justice system while building decision-making skills that support academic success, personal responsibility, and community engagement.

The L.I.F.E. Diversion Program is intended for middle and high school youth, generally between the ages of 10 and 17. It is especially beneficial for youth who may be at risk of negative decision-making, behavioral issues, or early involvement with the justice system.

Participation is often coordinated through schools, youth organizations, or referral partners.

  • Participants gain a realistic understanding of consequences tied to criminal behavior
  • Youth are encouraged to take responsibility for their choices
  • The program promotes self-reflection and critical thinking
  • Diversion allows youth to learn without acquiring a criminal record
  • Participants develop awareness that supports healthier life decisions

By exposing youth to real experiences and honest conversations, the L.I.F.E. Diversion Program helps participants better understand how actions today can affect opportunities tomorrow. Many youth leave the program with a renewed focus on education, personal accountability, and long-term goals.
