The very first Annual Sailing Regatta began in the summer of 1998 when San Diego Police Sergeant Bill Campbell and friends first gave kids the chance to set sail. Although the official year for the regatta began in 1998, Bill has been taking kids sailing since 1991. The regatta consists of Sergeant Campbell plus other San Diego Police personnel who donate their sailboats and their time demonstrating the fundamentals of sailing while promoting team values during a sailing race. Event sponsor Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn & Suites provide lunch for the event and T-shirts are given to everyone who participates. Harbor Police also joins the fun by giving boat tours, personal watercraft demonstrations and water cannon displays. The regatta is an all day event held in July and the cost is free to participants. This event continually needs volunteers with boats to help participate in the program to involve more youth. For more information contact Officer Tim Smith at tmsmith@pd.sandiego.gov
